Why is stress dosing one of the most important skills to understand when living with adrenal insufficiency?

In this episode, we explore the purpose of stress dosing and why the body may need additional glucocorticoid support during illness, injury, procedures, or other significant physiological stress. For people with adrenal insufficiency, the challenge isn't simply having less cortisol—it is losing some or all of the body's ability to automatically increase cortisol production when demand suddenly rises.

We break down what stress dosing is designed to accomplish: replacing the additional cortisol a healthy adrenal system would normally produce in response to increased physiological demand. We also discuss why learning when to use your individualized sick-day plan can feel confusing, particularly when stress isn't always obvious or symptoms overlap with everyday adrenal insufficiency.

This episode looks at the difference between ordinary daily stress and situations that may create a greater physiological cortisol demand, why illness can escalate more quickly when the body cannot mount its normal cortisol response, and why written instructions from your medical team are so important.

We also address the uncertainty many people experience around stress dosing—the fear of taking too much, the fear of waiting too long, and the difficulty of making decisions when you're already sick, exhausted, or experiencing brain fog.

Most importantly, mastering stress dosing isn't about reacting fearfully to every symptom. It's about understanding your body, knowing the plan you and your healthcare team have established, and being prepared to respond when circumstances require additional support.

If you've ever wondered why stress dosing matters, why it can be so difficult to judge, or how to become more confident with your own emergency and sick-day plan, this episode helps build the foundation for understanding this essential part of adrenal insufficiency management.
