Adrenal Insufficiency and the Gut
Your digestive system and adrenal insufficiency may be more connected than many people realize.
In this episode, we explore the relationship between adrenal insufficiency and the gut—including why nausea, abdominal discomfort, appetite changes, diarrhea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal symptoms can sometimes become part of the adrenal insufficiency picture.
We look at the role cortisol plays throughout the body and how inadequate cortisol availability can affect circulation, metabolism, inflammation, fluid balance, and the body's ability to respond to physiological stress. The digestive system is deeply connected to these processes, which helps explain why gastrointestinal symptoms can appear when someone is becoming unwell.
There is also an important two-way relationship: adrenal insufficiency can affect the gut, but problems in the gut can also complicate adrenal insufficiency. Vomiting or severe diarrhea may interfere with the absorption of oral glucocorticoid medication while simultaneously creating additional physiological stress and fluid loss. That combination is one reason gastrointestinal illness deserves particular attention for people with AI.
The episode also explores why the bigger picture matters. Not every digestive symptom in someone with adrenal insufficiency is caused by adrenal insufficiency. Medications, infections, autoimmune conditions, previous gastrointestinal or bariatric surgery, food intolerances, and entirely separate digestive disorders may also need consideration.
And there are differences among primary, secondary, tertiary, and steroid-induced adrenal insufficiency. Primary AI can include aldosterone deficiency, adding sodium and fluid-balance challenges that may become particularly important when vomiting or diarrhea occurs.
If you've ever wondered why your stomach seems to react when your body is under stress—or why a stomach bug can become much more consequential when you have adrenal insufficiency—this episode explores the fascinating connection between the gut, cortisol, hydration, medication absorption, and the body's ability to maintain stability.
