Why can your lab results look reassuring while your body is telling a completely different story?
In this episode, we explore one of the most misunderstood aspects of adrenal insufficiency and chronic illness: the gap between laboratory values and biological reality. While blood tests are important tools, they are only one piece of a much larger clinical picture and don’t always reflect how someone is functioning in daily life.
We discuss why laboratory tests provide only a snapshot in time, how hormone levels fluctuate throughout the day, and why factors such as medication timing, stress, illness, sleep, and individual physiology can influence results. We also explore why two people with similar lab values may experience very different symptoms, and why “normal” results don’t always mean optimal function for every individual.
This episode explains why understanding the limitations of laboratory testing is especially important for people living with primary, secondary, tertiary, and steroid-induced adrenal insufficiency. Rather than relying on a single number, we discuss the importance of looking at symptoms, trends over time, medical history, and the broader clinical picture.
Most importantly, we focus on helping patients better understand how laboratory testing fits into their overall care. Labs are valuable, but they should support—not replace—careful clinical judgment and thoughtful conversations with your healthcare team.
If you’ve ever been told your labs looked normal while you still felt profoundly unwell, this episode will help explain why that disconnect can happen and why your lived experience remains an important part of the conversation.
