Why are some of the most disruptive symptoms of adrenal insufficiency rarely the ones people hear about first?

In this episode, we move beyond the familiar textbook symptoms and explore the hidden symptoms of adrenal insufficiency—the experiences that can be difficult to describe, easy to dismiss, and sometimes confusing even after diagnosis.

We look at how disrupted cortisol regulation can affect far more than energy alone. Adrenal insufficiency can influence the brain, nervous system, circulation, metabolism, digestion, temperature regulation, and the body's ability to respond and recover from everyday demands. That can create experiences that don't immediately look like an "adrenal symptom."

We explore symptoms such as brain fog, cognitive fatigue, sensory overload, shakiness, adrenaline-like surges, feeling wired but exhausted, temperature intolerance, unpredictable digestive problems, weakness, difficulty recovering after activity, and the feeling that relatively ordinary physical or emotional demands affect the body far more than they should.

This episode also examines why symptoms may fluctuate throughout the day and why medication timing, sleep, illness, exertion, hydration, other health conditions, and accumulated physiological stress can change how someone feels. We discuss why experiences also differ across primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease), secondary, tertiary, and steroid-induced adrenal insufficiency.

Most importantly, recognizing these less obvious symptoms does not mean assuming that everything is caused by adrenal insufficiency. Many of these experiences have multiple possible causes. Understanding them should encourage better pattern recognition and broader conversations with your healthcare team—not put every symptom into the "adrenal bucket."

If you've ever thought, "I know something is happening in my body, but I don't know how to explain it," this episode explores the physiology behind some of the symptoms that don't always make the textbook list.
