Why Your Adrenal Symptoms Change Daily
Why can you feel relatively stable one day and completely depleted the next—even when you haven't changed anything obvious?
In this episode, we explore one of the most frustrating parts of living with adrenal insufficiency: symptoms that can change from day to day, and sometimes hour to hour.
Adrenal insufficiency doesn't exist in a vacuum. Your body's cortisol needs are constantly changing in response to physical activity, emotional stress, sleep, illness, pain, hydration, temperature, digestion, medications, and countless other physiological demands. Replacement medication provides cortisol support, but it cannot perfectly reproduce the body's natural ability to continuously adjust cortisol production throughout the day.
We discuss how this changing balance between cortisol availability and cortisol demand can help explain why an activity that feels manageable one day may feel completely different another day. We also explore the cumulative effect of stressors—the idea that several relatively small demands can stack together until the body has much less reserve available to handle the next one.
The episode also looks at why symptoms can differ among people with primary, secondary, tertiary, and steroid-induced adrenal insufficiency, and why other hormones, medical conditions, medications, sleep quality, and everyday life still need to be considered rather than assuming every difficult day is caused by adrenal insufficiency.
Most importantly, fluctuating symptoms don't mean your experience isn't real. Understanding patterns over time can provide much more useful information than judging your health by one unusually good—or unusually difficult—day.
If you've ever wondered, “Why could I do this yesterday but can't do it today?”, this episode helps explain why living with adrenal insufficiency can involve a constantly changing relationship between what your body has available and what life is asking it to do.
