Diagnosed adrenal insufficiency

Adrenal insufficiency is a serious medical condition in which the body cannot produce adequate cortisol, an essential hormone needed to respond to illness, injury, infection, surgery, dehydration, severe stress, or other physical demands. (This sentence is used on the emergency information page.)

The adrenal glands sit above the kidneys. In primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease), the glands themselves cannot produce enough of the hormones they normally make. Other types start elsewhere in the signaling loop: secondary adrenal insufficiency when the pituitary does not send enough ACTH, and tertiary or steroid-induced adrenal insufficiency when hypothalamic signaling or long-term glucocorticoid (steroid) exposure can suppress the HPA axis. A name that is not a diagnosis

Owner-confirmed podcast copy on this site already draws a distinction: adrenal insufficiency is a serious, medically recognized condition that can become life-threatening without proper management, especially during illness or stress, and it is not the same as the widely misunderstood concept of “adrenal fatigue.” Understanding that distinction is important for clarity. Wellness products and lifestyle language do not treat adrenal insufficiency.
